WHAT YOU WILL LEARN

Operating a tower crane involves far more than just moving levers; it requires total site awareness:

  • Pre-Operational Inspections: Checking hoist ropes, limit switches, brakes, and structural bolts.
  • Lifting Plans & Load Charts: Understanding “Radius vs. Capacity” to ensure the crane is never overloaded.
  • Safe Maneuvering: Mastering smooth starts and stops to prevent “load swing” and ensure precision placement.
  • Signals & Communication: Working effectively with Slinger/Signallers using hand signals and radio protocols.
  • Environmental Factors: Monitoring wind speeds (Anemometers) and understanding “Out of Service” procedures for high winds.
  • Slew Control: Managing the 360° rotation of the jib while avoiding obstacles and exclusion zones.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

Due to the nature of the work, certain prerequisites are essential:

  • Experience Level:
    • Novice: 10-day comprehensive training.
    • Refresher/EWT: Assessment for experienced operators.
  • Fitness: Candidates must be comfortable working at heights and pass a standard fitness/eyesight check.
  • PPE Required: Hard Hat (with chin strap for height), High-Visibility Vest, and Steel-Toed Safety Boots.
  • CITB HS&E Test: Required to have been completed within the last 2 years.

ASSESSMENT & CERTIFICATION

The assessment is designed to meet the highest industry standards:

  1. Theory Test: A professional discussion or written exam covering LOLER regulations, weight calculations, and safety protocols.
  2. Practical Test: A series of lifts and maneuvers, including navigating loads through a designated course and landing them with precision.
  3. The Card: Successful candidates earn the NPORS Tower Crane Card, recognised by major contractors across the UK.

UPGRADING FROM TRAINED OPERATOR (RED) CARD TO COMPETENT OPERATOR (BLUE) CARD

In the NPORS scheme, obtaining your initial certificate is only the first step. To maintain your standing on major UK construction sites, you must progress from a Trained Operator to a Competent Operator.

Upon successful completion of your N102 technical tests, you will be issued a Red NPORS Card.

  • Validity: 2 Years (Non-renewable).

  • Purpose: This card allows you to work on-site while you gain the practical “seat time” required to prove your long-term competence.

To stay in the cab after your Red Card expires, you must upgrade to the Blue NPORS Card. This is the industry-standard credential that demonstrates you have met the national occupational standards for tower crane operation.

  • Validity: 5 Years (Renewable).

  • Requirement: To upgrade, you must achieve a NVQ Level 2 in Plant Operations.

At AT Plant Training, we don’t just leave you with a Red Card. We provide the guidance and support needed to bridge the gap to your Blue Card. This includes:

  • NVQ Enrolment: Assisting you in finding the right path to your Level 2 qualification.

  • On-Site Assessments: Coordinating the workplace observations required for your NVQ portfolio.

  • Continuous Support: Expert advice from an instructor with 43 years of industry experience to ensure your logbooks and evidence meet the highest standards.

Note: You must also have a valid CITB Health, Safety and Environment (HS&E) touch-screen test pass within the last 2 years to apply for either card.
