N201 Excavator 180° Training
Combining the versatility of a front loader with the precision of a rear-mounted excavator, the 180° backhoe loader is a staple of civil engineering and utility works. Our NPORS-accredited course prepares operators to master this multi-functional machine with confidence and safety.

WHAT YOU WILL LEARN
Because the 180° excavator has two distinct operating ends, the training is comprehensive:
- Dual-End Operation: Transitioning safely between the front-end loader and the rear excavator controls.
- Stability & Stabilisers: Correct deployment of stabiliser legs and “working within the envelope” to prevent overturning.
- Front Loader Work: Bulk handling of materials, loading dumpers, and using the front bucket for site stripping and backfilling.
- Backhoe Excavation: Digging trenches, footings, and utility pits with the rear boom.
- Travel Mode: Understanding the weight distribution and safety requirements for road travel and site transit.
- Pre-Use Inspections: Checking hydraulic rams, pins, bushes, and tire pressures specific to backhoe loaders.
ENTRY REQUIREMENTS
- Experience Level: Novice: 10-day course covering both ends of the machine.
- Refresher/EWT: 1-day assessment for experienced operators needing to formalise their skills.
- Fitness: Good coordination, physical health, and eyesight.
- PPE Required: Candidates must provide their own Hard Hat, High-Visibility Vest, and Steel-Toed Safety Boots.
- CITB HS&E Test: Required to have been completed within the last 2 years.
ASSESSMENT & CERTIFICATION
Candidates must pass a two-part assessment:
- Theory Test: A professional discussion or written exam focused on 180° machine physics, site safety, and legislation.
- Practical Test: Demonstration of both front-loading tasks and rear-excavation tasks, including traveling the machine through a chicane and stabilising on uneven ground.
Successful completion earns the NPORS Excavator 180° Trained Operator (red) Card valid for 2 years, and then subject to further assessment within 2 years and an NVQ Level 2 to receive the NPORS Excavator 180° Competent Operator (blue) Card, valid for 5 years.
WHY CHOOSE AT PLANT TRAINING?
The 180° is a “driver’s machine”—it takes skill to operate both ends fluidly. With 43 years of industry experience, our instructor provides the technical “know-how” to help you master the machine’s balance and capabilities. We focus on making you an asset to any site, not just a cardholder.
