WHAT YOU WILL LEARN

This course focuses on the mechanical and procedural safeguards required when using quick-release systems on 360° and 180° excavators:

  • Types of Quick Hitch: Understanding the difference between manual, semi-automatic, and fully automatic hydraulic systems.
  • Safety Features: Identifying safety pins, locking indicators, and “check valves” designed to prevent accidental release.
  • The Verification Procedure: Mastering the “Safety Check” (or “Bump Test”) to ensure the attachment is fully engaged before operation.
  • Maintenance & Inspection: Spotting wear and tear in the hitch housing, pins, and hydraulic hoses.
  • Legal Responsibilities: Compliance with PUWER (Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations) specific to lifting and excavating attachments.
  • The Danger Zone: Understanding the catastrophic consequences of a “bucket drop” and how to manage exclusion zones during changes.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

  • Experience Level: Primarily aimed at existing plant operators, but also highly valuable for site supervisors and banksmen who oversee machine operations.
  • Prerequisite: Candidates should ideally have a basic understanding of excavator operation (e.g., N202 or N201).
  • PPE Required: Hard Hat, High-Visibility Vest, and Steel-Toed Safety Boots (for the practical demonstration element).

ASSESSMENT & CERTIFICATION

The course ensures that the “Safety First” mindset is backed by technical knowledge:

  1. Theory Test: A written or verbal assessment covering the safety protocols and mechanical checks for various hitch types.
  2. Practical Demonstration: Candidates must demonstrate the correct procedure for attaching and detaching a bucket, including the mandatory safety verification steps.
  3. The Card: Successful completion results in the NPORS N726 Quick Hitch Awareness accreditation, which can be added to your existing NPORS card.
